On Sunday, 2nd February 2025, the children of Junior Church gathered to celebrate Candlemas, a special feast marking the presentation of Jesus at the temple. This meaningful event offered a wonderful opportunity for young participants to explore the significance of the day and how it is observed by Christians around the world.
During the session, the children learned about the story of Jesus’ presentation and its importance in Christian tradition. They discovered how different communities mark this occasion, embracing themes of light, blessing, and the transition from the Christmas season into the new year of faith.
Engaging in hands-on activities, the children crafted their own beeswax candles, symbolizing Jesus as the Light of the World. They also created decorative blessings to hang at home, serving as a reminder of the lessons learned and the warmth of faith shared during the celebration.
Food also played a special role in the event. Following traditions observed in some Christian communities, the children enjoyed delicious crepes (pancakes) topped with strawberries and bananas. This tradition of eating crepes on Candlemas is rooted in European customs and serves as a symbolic way to bring people together in faith and fellowship.
The event was met with enthusiasm, with one participant sharing, "It was very interesting and great fun too!" The combination of storytelling, creativity, and shared food made for a memorable experience, reinforcing the joy and significance of Candlemas.
Junior Church continues to provide engaging and meaningful ways for children to connect with their faith, and this celebration of Candlemas was a shining example of learning through tradition, creativity, and community.
